Celtic Art Therapy and Anxiety

As with ADHD, individuals suffering from anxiety occasionally reject the benefit of Celtic Art Therapy as being too involved for their mental state. Others, however, are so desirous of helping their anxiety that they are readily open to the Celtic Art Experience.

Given that anxiety, along with panic attacks, are often the product of too much stimuli creating an overactive brain state in which the mind obsesses on fear, dread and similar thoughts, placing the brain into a passive state can be very beneficial.

Showing the Celtic Art Therapy collection for the past two years has yielded the following observations with regard to anxiety.

While Celtic Art Therapy designs such as the Celtic Curls have helped ease an anxious state, the Celtic Art Therapy design best used to counter anxiety is the Celtic Trinity Knot.

The Celtic Art Trinity Knot design has 2 applications, both of which work well to ease an anxious mind.

  • First, the Celtic knot surrounding the center Trinity Knot has a lulling, side-to-side flow when traced. This Celtic knot is very soothing and easy to follow.
  • Second, the Celtic Trinity Knot itself can be traced by hand as a repetitive motion exercise that has the ability to induce a mild state of hypnosis. Please see the Celtic Trinity Knot Art Therapy video for an explanation of this application.
    • During the hypnosis exercise, an individual is encouraged to first relax the shoulders, then the back of the neck, then the upper back.
    • An individual is next told to keep the lower back strong, along with the side and abdominal muscles. The reason for this is 2-fold; one, a strong core is key to centering the body physically and two, patients tend to relax too greatly without this cue and have begun to collapse.
    • Finally the individual is told to keep the shoulders and breathing soft, the core muscles strong and supportive (not tense), and continue tracing the Celtic Trinity Knot until they wish to stop, at which time they should lift themselves up from the experience, take a deep breath, and set themselves back down on firm ground.

The following are two specific observations made by Celtic artist Anne Ravensdaughter with regard to anxiety.

  • At the Texas Renaissance Festival, Anne worked with a young mother of two who was suffering from anxiety to the point that she had been prescribed Xanax. Using the blue Celtic Trinity Knot Art Therapy Plate, Anne helped the young woman first trace the Celtic knot surrounding the center Trinity Knot. The woman instantly felt the shift to a passive brain state and exclaimed, “My goodness, this is crazy. It really works.” When Anne helped the young woman trace the center Celtic Trinity Knot and gave the hypnosis cues listed above, the woman began to experience “release” within a few minutes and started crying. When she couldn’t understand why she had begun to cry, Anne told her, “That’s how the body releases stress.”
    • NOTE: Anne has personally seen three individuals experience “release” from anxiety, and begin to cry when using this technique. One young teen girl at the Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire softly said that she felt “absolutely free” for the first time.
  • When showing at the Arizona Renaissance Festival, Anne met a lady who suffered from panic attacks. Anne showed her how to use the blue Celtic Trinity Knot Art Therapy Plate. Even though the woman did not experience “release” she did acknowledge that for the briefest moment she felt “different”. Anne encouraged the woman to use the plate in the privacy of her home where the pressures and intrusion of the busy renaissance venue would not pose a distraction or threaten her private relaxation.
